The Language Consultant teaches English a Second Language (ESL) for 42 weeks a year in the Glasscock School of Continuing Studies Language Programs.

Part-Time/Adjunct Position

The schedule involves teaching English as a Second Language in the classroom four hours a day, five days a week during the 42 weeks that the Intensive English Program classes are in session. During the 42 weeks of teaching, this position performs 20 hours of preparation weekly. The breakdown for total weekly employment during the 42 teaching weeks is designated 50% in the classroom and 50% preparation time.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Teach English as a Second Language in the classroom four hours a day, five days a week during the 42 weeks that Intensive English Program classes are in session. The specific teaching schedule for each session will be determined by the Director. Intensive English Program classes are taught in the morning or afternoon.
- Perform 20 hours of preparation weekly during the 42 weeks classes are in session.
- Administer and score exit examinations (up to 3-5 times per year).
- Attend scheduled teachers’ meetings and curriculum meetings (usually 4-5 meetings total per session).
- Attend Staff Development Days (usually held twice yearly).
- Participate in discussions and workshops and contribute topics, themes and presentations in conjunction with other members of the teaching staff.
- Attend TEXTESOL Region IV meetings held in Houston, if they do not conflict with class hours.
- Be available to meet with students during office hours at a mutually convenient time, up to five hours weekly.
- Prepare and submit midterm reports and final grades. Final grades are prepared using a database program.
- Participate in ESL extra-curricular activities such as field trips and social events a maximum of 3-5 times per year.
- Teachers are expected to follow the curriculum that is set for the program. Cooperative efforts and sharing between partner teachers is encouraged through curriculum meetings and building of shared files on the teachers’ network.

Required: Master’s degree in teaching English as a Second Language or a master’s degree in a field closely related to teaching English as a Second Language, accompanied by 12 graduate hours in ESL; one year of experience teaching English as a Second Language; native level proficiency in English; excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to teach all skill areas (reading, writing, listening, speaking, pronunciation and grammar); ability to teach all levels of the program from beginning through advanced.
