READING/ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE INSTRUCTOR
(Categorically Funded)

POSITION AVAILABLE: Instructor of Reading/English as a Second Language (ESL) in the English Division, with possible assignment in language and/or writing labs. This position is a full-time, categorically funded, ten-month contract assignment of 177 annual service days, which may include teaching day, evening and weekend classes and teaching at extended campus locations.
STARTING DATE: August 21, 2009

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must meet one of the following qualifications under (a) through (d):
(a) Possess a valid Lifetime California Community College Credential that permits full-time service as an Instructor of English as a Second Language;
-or-
(b) Possess a Master’s degree, from an accredited institution, in TESL, TESOL,
applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis,
English with a TESL emphasis, or education with a TESL emphasis;
-or-
(c) Possess a Bachelor’s degree in TESL, TESOL, English with TESL certificate,
linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or
any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND a Master’s in linguistics,
applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bi-cultural studies, reading,
speech, or any foreign language;
-or-
(d) Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least equivalent to the above. (Applicants requesting equivalency must complete form provided in this application packet and provide supporting documentation).
-AND-
2. Must meet one of the following qualifications under (a) through (e):
(a) Possess a valid Lifetime California Community College Credential that permits full-time service as an Instructor of Reading;
-or-
(b) Possess a Master’s degree, from an accredited institution, in education with a specialization in reading or teaching reading ;
-or-
(c) Possess a Bachelor’s degree, from an accredited institution, in any academic discipline AND twelve semester units of course work in teaching reading AND a Master’s degree in English, literature, linguistics, applied linguistics, composition, comparative literature, TESL, or psychology;
-or-
(d) Possess a Master’s degree, from an accredited institution, in education,
educational psychology, or instructional psychology, or other master’s degree
with emphasis in adult learning theory
-or-
(e) Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least equivalent to the above. (Applicants requesting equivalency must complete form provided in this application packet and provide support documentation).

3. Demonstrate sensitivity to and ability to work with diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with disabilities. (AB 1725, 87360a).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Experience in developing credit and non-credit curricula.
2. Experience organizing student activities.
3. Experience in ESL placement procedures.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Demonstrated success in communicative-based language teaching.
2. Knowledge of current methodology and theory.
3. Proven ability to teach a variety of levels within English as a Second Language, to include grammar, writing speaking, listening, vocabulary, and reading.
4. Experience with language labs and computer-assisted learning.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1. Provide ESL instruction at varying skill levels in accordance with approved Imperial Valley College curriculum and established course outlines.
2. Possible assignment teaching language lab classes in computer assisted learning and in the writing lab providing guidance and learning materials.
3. Participate in curriculum development, the evaluation and revision of courses, course materials, instructional methods, self-study, program review and master plan.
4. Serve on departmental/college committees.
5. Advise students on academic matters.
6. Maintain required student attendance and scholastic records, submit in accordance with published deadlines.
7. Willingness to develop and/or teach on-line courses and participate in technical on-line training.
8. Enthusiastic commitment to using teamwork to achieve program, institutional, and community goals.
9. Prepare and grade class assignments and examinations.
10. Provide outreach and articulation services to other educational organizations.
11. Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students (AB1725, 87360a).

COMPENSATION: Salary range from $44,306 to $95,334; starting salary range from $44,306 to $63,027 (doctoral stipend available), depending upon education and experience. 177 annual service days, fringe benefits package includes employer paid medical, dental, life, vision, prescription and salary protection plans. Academic employees are covered under STRS (State Teacher’s Retirement System).
