Job Description: ESL Teacher
Location: University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, WA (www.ups.edu)
Dates: Friday, July 25, 2008 – Friday, August 9, 2008 (approximate classroom teaching is about 7 days)
Main Objective: Provide Japanese High School students with practical and hands-on ESL lessons to help them prepare for a ten-month study abroad and homestay program all across the U.S.
Curriculum includes topics on:
- Basic survival skills in the U.S.: going to the bank, post office, using a pay phone and speaking on the phone
- Conflict and stress management skills: verbalizing feelings and asking for help (how to ask for help), learning to be flexible when things don’t go as expected
- Assertiveness and self-initiation: leadership skills, contributing as a family member at the host family’s (common perception in the U.S. that high school students are considered “young adults†and not “childrenâ€)
- Public speaking skills – how to prepare and give presentations (at the host schools, students will be asked to give presentations on various topics related to Japan)
- Writing practice – formats for school reports, essays, etc.
- Speaking in discussions – learning the conversation flow, timing in which to speak in a group setting, the value of expressing opinions/ideas
- Giving feedback – learning to reflect and to give verbal feedback
- Other topics to be covered such as multiculturalism, etc.
We are looking for an ESL teacher who will work as a team with a lead ESL teacher and classroom interns.
ESL teacher qualifications:
• MA in teaching English as a second language preferred
• Classroom teaching experience, working with Japanese students a plus but not required
• Minimum of 2 recommendations from someone who has seen results of your teaching
Compensation depends on experience, lodging and all meals provided on campus.
