The Position:
The Community College of Aurora serves an increasingly diverse community in which nearly one out of three persons speaks a language other than English at home. In response, CCA’s college-preparatory English as a Second Language program has grown rapidly over the last few years (up 38% in the last year alone) while striving to improve program quality and rigor.
The college is seeking a department chair to lead this expanding program, continue to increase enrollment, improve student learning, better assess student language skills and program outcomes, and more closely link the program with the college’s community ESL program.
Competitive candidates will be able to handle multiple tasks and deadlines while maintaining the requirements of the department and fulfilling instructional duties. They will be creative and energetic instructional leaders with strong management skills, knowledge of current language teaching practices, the ability to lead faculty and staff, and a passion for helping students progress through ESL courses and into college degree and certificate programs.
The successful candidate will join the college as a regular faculty member and will receive the department chair appointment upon hire. The department chair will teach a reduced class load to lead the program. The chair appointment extends the normal 9-month faculty contract to 12 months with additional pay.
In order to perform the essential functions of this position, the ESL faculty member must possess the ability to effectively communicate, concentrate, analyze data, pay attention to detail, negotiate, and utilize strong interpersonal skills.
Duties and Responsibilities:

* Leadership and management for the ESL Department
* Development and growth of innovative instructional programs and formats
* Assessment of student learning and program outcomes
* Promotion of instructional and student use of technology
* Recruitment, evaluation, and supervision of faculty
* Development partnerships and resources
* Oversight of the appropriate use of resources
* Collaboration to build student enrollment and retention
Faculty Responsibilities:
* Develop and teach curriculum that meets student and community needs
* Maintain accurate and timely records of students’ class performance
* Infuse the curriculum with technology
* Actively engage students in the learning process
* Contribute to instructional planning, assessment, and curriculum review
* Pursue professional development in subject matter and instructional methods
* Support student activities
* Serve on committees
* Attend meetings called by the President, Vice-President of Instruction, Director of Aurora Language Center
* Assist the Director of Aurora Language Center with other activities as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
* Master’s degree in TESL/TEFL, applied linguistics, or related field
* Higher education or adult ESL teaching experience
* Passion and vision for building an outstanding community college ESL program
Preferred Qualifications:
* Demonstrated effectiveness in coaching language teachers and building an effective teaching team
* Experience administering an ESL program including budget management
* Experience in student recruitment, retention, and program growth
* Demonstrated ability to promote instructional and student use of technology
* Commitment to innovative language instruction, course scheduling, and instructional formats
* Knowledge of the testing and assessment of student language learning and proficiency
* Experience in using data to guide ESL program development and excellence
Contract Specifics & Salary Range: With the chair appointment this is a 12-month faculty contract. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and in accordance with the 2008-2009 Administrative Salary Schedule. Starting salary range is high $40′s to low $60′s per year.
