Bellevue College (Washington) Full-time ESL Instructor Needed
THE DEPARTMENT
The English Language Institute focuses on English language acquisition addressing four broad areas of development: preparation for academic study in English in American institutions of higher learning, preparation for general English use in the workplace in either a domestic or international setting, preparation for effective use of English in social or survival situations, and preparation for understanding of media coverage of world events and current issues in English. The ELI serves approximately 700 students each quarter.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
As an instructor in the English Language Institute, the individual is responsible for teaching courses in the intensive International Business Professions Program and/or University Preparation Program. Instructional hours will be 20 hours per week for 3 ½ quarters (174 days per year.) In addition, the individual will provide:
* teaching and learning excellence including effective assessment of student learning outcomes
* on-going curriculum development, revision, and implementation; maintaining currency and relevancy of curriculum and program with emphasis on the IBP Program
* support and improvement in the retention and success of all students
* a learning environment where diversity and pluralism are valued
* participation in welcoming and graduation activities
* participation in new-student testing and placement
* effective contribution and participation in division and college governance
SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Utilize a variety of teaching and learning strategies and innovative techniques including: integration of technology to assist students in the achievement of learning outcomes and outcomes assessment.
* Advise students on internship placement
* Conduct off-campus student evaluations at internship worksites
* Possess cultural competency knowledge and skills or demonstrate a willingness to gain competency.
* Support college initiatives related to pluralism and possess strong commitment to student success and ability to foster a positive and caring learning environment; and build learning communities within the classroom/laboratory setting.
* Maintain effective communication with a diverse faculty, staff and students, and clinical staff.
* Maintain effective communication with internship/observation agencies, businesses, etc. by conducting site visits
* Participate in on-going curriculum development, revision, and program evaluation/assessment.
* Participate in the advising and mentoring of students enrolled in program and to prospective students.
* Contribute to policy and procedural matters of the college through participation on college/institute/program committees and through individual projects to facilitate institutional effectiveness.
* Attend and participate in departmental meetings and serve on various college committees.
* Participate in professional development
* Participate in community organizations, events or in related projects and promote collaborative relationships with high schools and four year colleges/universities (develop articulation agreements).
* Perform other pertinent contractual duties and functions that may be assigned by the Institute Director, the Executive Dean of Instruction or the President.
