WorldTeach is based at the Center for International Development at Harvard University and has been training, placing, and supporting volunteers in developing countries since 1986.

We currently offer year-long, summer, and six-month programs in locations throughout the world.

Year-long programs: American Samoa, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guyana, the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Namibia, Rwanda and Thailand.

Semester-long programs: Chile Ministry Semester and Namibia Semester.

Summer Programs: Bulgaria, China, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Namibia, Poland and South Africa.

Most volunteers teach English and in some countries, volunteers may also teach math, science, computer skills and HIV/AIDS awareness. Volunteers work as full-time teachers in their placement countries, as employees of their host schools or sponsoring institutions.  Most volunteers live with a host family or on the school campus, and participate fully in the life of their host communities.

Details/Qualifications:

For year and semester long programs, volunteers must have a BA/BS degree. For summer programs, volunteers must be 18 years of age. Volunteers must be native English speakers and should demonstrate a commitment to international development, teaching, public service and cultural understanding.

Cost:

For most programs, volunteers must pay a program fee which covers: international round-trip airfare, pre-departure information and preparation, in-country orientation, 24-hr field support, health insurance, room and board and a living stipend for year-long and semester programs.

The abolition of slavery led to black settlement of urban areas and the importation of indentured servants from India to work the sugar plantations. This ethnocultural divide has persisted and has led to turbulent politics. Guyana achieved independence from the UK in 1966, and since then it has been ruled mostly by socialist-oriented governments. In 1992, Cheddi JAGAN was elected president in what is considered the country’s first free and fair election since independence. After his death five years later, his wife, Janet JAGAN, became president but resigned in 1999 due to poor health. Her successor, Bharrat JAGDEO, was reelected in 2001 and again in 2006.
