Details

English Academy Varna is looking for 1 full time teacher and 1 part time teacher to teach in Varna, Bulgaria, on the black sea coast.

The school and resources
English Academy Varna was established in 2006 and has grown to be one of the most popular schools in Varna. Currently, we have 350 adult students and 80 young learners studying at the school and 11 teachers from Britain and the USA. The school is very modern and we have many resources available for teachers including 3 cupboards of additional resource books, 5 computers with supplementary material linked to the books, 2 fast photocopiers, projector connected to a computer for teachers use and oversized whiteboards in every class. Our aim is to be the most professional and prestigious school in Varna and as such we expect the highest standards from our teachers.

Courses
The school works on a 4 term basis and teachers are allocated new classes at the start of each term. Each student is given a coursebook which they will follow throughout the course. Whilst teachers are expected to follow the course, we also expect teachers to use their own materials to supplement the course. We are well resourced and teachers are given support in this. Each student will have a Mid and End term test given by the teacher and will receive a certificate at the end of the course.

Teaching hours
Full time Teachers are expected to teach between 20-24 hours per week, 5 days a week with 2 consecutive days off in a row. We offer General Adult, Business, Exams and Young learner classes in groups of between 5-12 students onsite. Most of this teaching is in the evenings on weekdays, or in the daytime at weekends. We also have some individual students and offsite clients during the day. Teachers will not be expected to work split shifts and most of the daytime weekday work is taken up on a voluntary basis.

The positions
The full time position is for 1 year, from 8 Janauary 2011 to 15 December 2011 (4 school terms) and the part time position is negotitable. Both positions come with guaranteed hours (20-24 hours for the full time position and 12 hours+ for the part time position).
The full time candidate will initially be on a Sunday to Thursday contract with Fridays and Saturdays free. The hours will include 7 hours young learners (7-13 year olds) and 13-17 hours adult classes.

Ideally, we are looking for someone who can teach a full range of levels and ages. We have General and Business courses for Adults from beginner through to proficiency as well as CAE/IELTS and TOEFL exam classes. Experience in a full range of classes is a definite advantage. We also offer Young learner classes at weekends for children aged 7-13. We try to match teachers to their strengths and provide training for new levels. As mentioned, the new teacher will be expected to teach young learners and adult classes.

Cost of Living

Bulgaria is still very cheap compared to the rest of Europe. The Bulgarian Leva is fixed to the Euro at 1 euro=1.95 leva. In a local restaurant, salads are between 3-5 leva, main meals from 4-8 leva and beer around 1.50 leva. Public transport is 1 leva anywhere in the city limits.
Accommodation is one of the major costs at around 300-400 leva per month.

How to apply
Please send your CV and a recent photograph along with a motivation letter stating why you’d like to live in Bulgaria to Mark Mctaggart, Director, English Academy Varna.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview by phone/skype or in person where possible.

Please see www.englishacademybg.com or varnaschool.com for more details about the school.
Qualifications
Native Speaker (Essential) – See visa restrictions note for non EU citizens.
1st Degree (any subject)
Teaching certificate (CELTA OR EQUIVALENT) or QTS status
2 years teaching experience
Experience teaching a range of classes and Levels
Most importantly, we are looking for a friendly, outgoing person who can connect well with the students
Compensation
Full time position (Jan to Dec)
- Salary 20/22 leva (with/without tax) per hour for up to 24 hours onsite. Overtime paid at 22/24 leva per hour. Offsite courses from 25 leva per hour. – This equates to around 2,000 leva/1,000 euro after tax on a 24 hour contract.
- Teachers are guaranteed 20-24 hours per week depending on their situation during term times as advertised on our website and salaries are paid on the last working day of the month.
- We will arrange and pay for your work permit for Bulgaria for all EU citizens. Non EU citizens are responsible for their own visas as we cannot apply for them through the school.
- The first 2 nights accommodation will be paid for by the school after arrival in Varna. We will arrange for you to see apartments during these days and will check with you your requirements beforehand. Prices are from about 150 euro per month for a 1 bedroom apartment, 200 euro for a 2 bedroom apartment within walking distance from the school and centre of Varna.

The Bulgars, a Central Asian Turkic tribe, merged with the local Slavic inhabitants in the late 7th century to form the first Bulgarian state. In succeeding centuries, Bulgaria struggled with the Byzantine Empire to assert its place in the Balkans, but by the end of the 14th century the country was overrun by the Ottoman Turks. Northern Bulgaria attained autonomy in 1878 and all of Bulgaria became independent from the Ottoman Empire in 1908. Having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, Bulgaria fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a People’s Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990, when Bulgaria held its first multiparty election since World War II and began the contentious process of moving toward political democracy and a market economy while combating inflation, unemployment, corruption, and crime. The country joined NATO in 2004 and the EU in 2007.
