EF English First in Baku, Azerbaijan is looking for a native speaker EFL teacher to begin work immediately. EF Baku is a small and friendly school with a growing clientele, teaching largely General English to adults, while we also have some kids’ groups. This is also an opportunity to work as part of the EF organisation – a growing international school with good job advancement prospects around the world.Teacher’s Contract

The renewable contract is for 11 months (August, or somewhere around that time, is usually a non-teaching month as the city is mostly away on holiday then). The teaching week is Monday to Friday, usually evenings, and Saturday morning only. The work week is 40 hours: up to 25 actual teaching hours a week and the remaining 15 hours for admin duties, testing, lesson-planning, etc.

Salary

Salary for a teacher is $1,500 US paid in cash, in arrears at the end of each month. This amount is based on the hours outlined above. This rate is fixed, even if the teacher works fewer than the stated hours. Any teaching hours over and above will be paid for accordingly and on the agreement of the teacher and DOS/School Director.

Benefits

The school provides free health insurance, assistance with finding accommodation for the teacher on arrival and payment of the first month’s rent (thereafter the teacher pays from their salary). The cost of airfare to and from Azerbaijan will be met by the school. This is based on the cost of a standard return airfare from London. This is paid to the teacher upon successful completion of contract. The costs of visas: initial one-month tourist visa upon arrival and its subsequent change to a one-year work visa are paid for by the school.

Holidays include public and religious holidays at the discretion of the school. As well, a teacher is entitled to 15 days paid leave per contract, to be taken at a suitable time with mutual agreement.

Azerbaijan – a nation with a majority-Turkic and majority-Muslim population – was briefly independent from 1918 to 1920; it regained its independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Despite a 1994 cease-fire, Azerbaijan has yet to resolve its conflict with Armenia over the Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh enclave (largely Armenian populated). Azerbaijan has lost 16% of its territory and must support some 600,000 internally displaced persons as a result of the conflict. Corruption is ubiquitous, and the government has been accused of authoritarianism. Although the poverty rate has been reduced in recent years, the promise of widespread wealth from development of Azerbaijan’s energy sector remains largely unfulfilled.
