GENERAL NOTES
TECS Summer Camps are an activity based language learning programmes for which we need people who are prepared to work round the clock, organising and directing children’s activities in our four centres in Andalucia: EL PUERTO DE SANTA MARIA, SOTOGRANDE, GRAZALEMA (in the Sierra de Grazalema) and EL CHORRO, (in Malaga). The objective is for Spanish children to learn English whilst enjoying themselves in a camp atmosphere. No knowledge of Spanish is required except for Director, Assistant Director and Welfare positions.
Top Five Positions for TEFL.com Applicants
1. TEFL TEACHERS: staff position
We need EFL teachers who are not only prepared to deliver English lessons, but also run and participate in the organisation and running of camp activities: such as sports, evening entertainments and art workshops.
Criteria for selection: It is essential that our English teachers have either a recognised TEFL or teaching qualification. Other important factors such as: sports, art and crafts and music skills, creative ideas and barrels of enthusiasm will be looked upon favourably. No knowledge of Spanish required.
2. MONITORS AND SPECIALTY MONITORS: staff position
We need monitors to motivate and inspire the campers to use and learn the most English on camp possible through running activities and supervising the different aspects of the camp daily routine. There are many positions for monitors to specialise in activity area such as horseback riding, golf, water sports, and adventure sports.
Criteria for selection: Perspective candidates should have experience working with children and possess leadership qualities and a desire to work within the dynamics of a camp environment.
3. TEFL COORDINATORS: mid-management position
This is a mid management position for experienced TEFL teachers who have an interest in stepping into TEFL management. The position involves managing the assigned age group team of teachers, 5-8 teachers, in all TEFL areas and man-managing all staff, up to 20 personal, in the assigned activity programming areas. TEFL Coordinators also teach three or four hours of TEFL every day.
Criteria for selection: TEFL Coordinators must have creative minds and should have an interest in creating resources. They must have a recognised TEFL qualification and three years of TEFL teaching experience. Applicants with knowledge of Spanish preferred, but not essential.
4. ACTIVITY COORDINATORS: mid-management position
This is a mid management to run the age group activity programme is run to the highest quality in all areas. It is preferable that the Act. Coordinator has experience of organising activities for large groups of children and experience of working with foreign language children.
Criteria for selection: Applicants must have the ability to man-manage in a motivational and fair way which encourages staff to maintain high levels of performance. Applicants with TEFL or sporting qualifications will be looked upon favourably.
5. CAMP DIRECTOR: management position
This is a management position in oversee and ensure the highest quality of all areas of camp run by mid management in coordination with the Assistant Director on all levels of camp life. The position involves also running of all areas of the camp site facilities and services, including maintenance, kitchen, cleaning and laundry (done in coordination with Ast. Director).
Criteria for selection: Camp Directors must be TEFL qualified and preferred to have extra qualifications in TEFL or general teaching. Directors must have mid-management experience and of D.O.S.-like work is preferred. Directors need a high level of Spanish in all skill areas and a good knowledge of the customs and culture of Spanish people.
Other Positions
6. CAMP ASSSTANT DIRECTOR: management position
This position consists of running the parental communication network and ensuring that parents are frequently and effectively informed about all important issues regarding the camp experience of their child. The Ast. Director also oversees the organisation and quality of all sub contracted suppliers (off-site activities, cleaning, catering, etc.).
Criteria for selection: Ast. Directors must have a fluency in Spanish and a very high level of English and a good knowledge of the culture and customs of both countries to effectively communicate with fellow employees, parents and children in both languages. Candidates are preferred to have experience of administration like work, but not required if candidate has a good knowledge of computers and modern computer programmes.
7. NURSE MONITORS: staff position
Nurse Monitor’s duties are three fold:
•Look after the welfare of 10-12 children for their stay on camp.
•Run sports and arts and crafts sessions for a group of 12-15 children and participate and contribute in the running of evening entertainments.
.Cover for the nurse during their free time, giving simple first aid as required.
Criteria for selection: The primary basis for selection is that the applicant be an enthusiastic, energetic, and a responsible team player. Previous experience of working with children required. Applicant should either be studying Nursing or Medicine or have a first aid qualification.
8. DRIVERS: support position
This position would require daily driving the children in an eight seater camp van to activities which are done off site as well as daily collecting and buying supplies from the town centre. It would also involve doing pick ups and drop offs when children arrive and depart from the camp.
Criteria for selection: Applicants must have a valid in date driving licence and have three year’s driving experience and be comfortable with the prospect of driving an 8 seater van full of noisy children. Some knowledge of Spanish would be preferred. This position is suitable for those candidates wishing to enhance their Spanish rather than work directly with the children.
9. IT SPECIALIST: support position
The IT person’s primary responsibility is to update on a daily basis the camp’s web site. This would involve uploading photos and information. The IT person would also act as the camp photographer and film maker. At times, certain admin duties would also be required. The IT person is also responsible for daily giving out the children’s pocket money.
Criteria for selection: The IT person must be effective at working alone. Knowledge of html, windows environment and office suit program is needed and photography and film making skills an asset, although not essential. Previous experience working with money would also be looked upon favourable.
10. CAMP SUPPORT STAFF: support position
This position involves a mixture of tasks, including maintenance, basic cleaning and laundry, some admin work, at times acting as a guard at night and some work as a Camp Monitor. This position is ideal for candidates wishing to practice Spanish as communication with Spanish speaking personnel will be required at times. This job involves shorter working hours than other camp positions and suits applicants who desire a summer job working in Spain practising Spanish and getting a gradual introduction working with children.
TECS conducts face to face interviews in Spain (Madrid and Seville), the UK (London and West Midlands) and Ireland (Sligo, Dublin, Limerick, Galway and Cork).
Criteria for selection: Applicants for this position must understand that most of the work is not directly with children. Basic knowledge of Spanish required.
