Teach English - Mexico | ESL TEFL Job

EFL experienced teacher. Hermosillo, Mexico

Information about teaching at UVM

General

Hermosillo is only four hours from Tucson, Arizona, and is quite “Americanized”, although it’s quite a different living experience, as you might expect. It’s a great opportunity for teachers: the school and program itself are still growing and most people really respond well to an American’s interest in Mexico. Perhaps your greatest asset will be your desire to improve your Spanish and learn more about Mexico. So what’s it like teaching at UVM?It is a university affiliated to Laureate International Universities. The great majority or our students are from Hermosillo. There are 14 undergraduate programs, a high school, 5 graduate programs and 1 Doctorate program. We would also mention that it is extremely hot here in summer. But beaches at Kino Bay and San Carlos are only about an hour away from Hermosillo.
THE POSITIONThe English program, consists of 6 mandatory levels. We also offer three English electives for advanced students: Business English and Writing. Classes are an hour and forty five minutes long, twice a week. Full-time teachers are in the classroom teaching approximately twenty hours per week. The other twenty hours are divided between class preparation (10 hrs) and administrative work (10 hrs). TEXTBOOKS
We are using the series American Inside Out, from McMillan Publishers. Students are asked to buy the textbook and the workbook but teachers are welcome to supplement them with whatever materials they might find useful.
SCHOOL CALENDAR

There are three school terms at UVM, and we call them “cuatrimestres”1) September- December2) January- April3) May-August The teaching position that we are offering is considered to be a one year contract for teachers.
PROFESSIONAL APPEARANCEWe would like to emphasize the importance of professional appearance while teaching here in Mexico (no jeans, informal t-shirts, tennis shoes or informal sandals) Men are asked to keep their hair short and no to wear earrings.
WORK VISA

When you first come down here, you will be issued a tourist visa, which should be good for 30 days. You will then apply for an FM3 work visa through the Secretaría de Gobernación. The University pays for your visa and helps you with the process. Be sure to bring copies of your university Master’s with an APOSTILLE and Bachelor’s diplomas, birth certificate, and valid passport.
BRINGING A PERSONAL COMPUTER

This is a case of the law vs. Personal experience. Some teachers have brought their computers to Hermosillo in their cars. However, according to a Mexican customs officer in Nogales, used computers are not allowed in.. We would suggest that you call the nearest Mexican consulate for more information. IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Once you have your WORK VISA, you will be able to bring in any model year car you want and drive safely through the whole country with no problems, as long as your visa lasts (one year).
MONEY

The salary for a teacher with a Master’s degree is $ 19.000 (Mexican currency, PESOS), before taxes. You will be paid IN PESOS and will be able to live quite well on here, but it will all depend on what your lifestyle is. You will be paid every 15 days on the 14th and the 29th of every month. Your money will be deposited on a bank account, for which you will receive a ATM card to withdraw money or pay with it, almost everywhere. There are decent areas of town where you can rent a house for $4000 pesos per month. Food is more expensive in Sonora than in central and southern Mexico; expect pay about $200 pesos per week at the grocery store. Expect to spend around $400 pesos per week in gasoline. So, you won’t become wealthy teaching English in Mexico. Also, there will be no problems in opening a bank account and use a ATM card to withdraw money as long as you have your work visa.
FINDING A PLACE TO LIVE

We will drive you around the city to help you find accommodation, and, most of the time, will have some places ready for you to look.

Landlords usually ask for a deposit equal to the amount of two months rent.
