A little about Henan, Zhengzhou, and our Aston English School

Though Henan province is not in the middle of modern day China it is generally considered to be the center and cradle of Chinese civilization. With roughly 100 million people Henan is the most populous province in China. The Yellow River flows through the northern part of the province and it is mountainous in the west and north and has flat plains in the east and south. Henan is home to Songshan (Song mountain) one of China’s five sacred mountains as well as the world famous Shaolin Temple and the famous ancient dynastic capitals of Luoyang and Kaifeng.

Zhengzhou is located in the central plains of Henan just south of the Yellow River. The weather here is quite mild, not too hot in the summer and not too cold in the winter, with all four seasons being very distinct. The city is admittedly not the greatest tourist attraction in China. It is the provincial capital of Henan and is also the commercial, industrial, and agricultural center as well. The city’s train station is one of the largest in the country as it lies at the crossroads of the main north/south and east/west rail lines, if you need to take a train, you’ll probably be able to get anywhere in China from Zhengzhou. Also, because of this, Zhengzhou has a lot to offer people who like shopping, you can pretty much get whatever you need (or want) here and the city even boasts a couple of decent western supermarkets. The city is crowded, even by Chinese standards, though because of the relatively small area of the city, it is fairly easy to get around town. It is a great place to learn Chinese as the standard accent here is quite similar to standard Mandarin. Also, as it’s a developing city, Zhengzhou is a great place to see where China has come from as well as where it’s going in the future both culturally and socially.

Zhengzhou Aston English School is a small, developing, private training school that primarily teaches children ages 5 to 18 on the weekends and currently we have 200 students. We also offer adult classes during the week though recently we haven’t had any because of lack of interest. Admittedly our school itself is a bit old, however our parent company, Aston Educational Group, has given us the money to build a new and modern school soon and we hope to move within the first six months of 2010. Our Chinese staff realize that living in China can be quite stressful at times and try their best to be friendly and helpful to our foreign teachers in their daily lives. We also offer comfortable modern apartments for our teachers, as again, we know it can be hard to live in China as a foreigner and we like our teachers to have comfortable homes.
