The Canary Islands (Spanish: Islas Canarias) (28° 06′N, 15° 24′W) are an African archipelago which are part of Spain and consist of seven islands of volcanic origin in the Atlantic Ocean. They are located off the north-western coast of mainland Africa (Morocco and the Western Sahara). They form the autonomous community of the Canary Islands. The Canary Islands were formed by the Canary hotspot. The status of capital city is shared by Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
